If you have ever served on an organized, highly proficient, united team then you are extremely blessed!

Unfortunately, too many of you have had experience with the dark side of leadership teams: the kind that are disjointed and unproductive.

We have all been there on these teams (I use the term loosely). Just being in a meeting with this group can cause you to consider “sticking a sharp object in your eye” if you have to spend one more moment in the room with  them.

So what makes the difference?

Why are some leadership teams highly productive? Why is it that their team members actually enjoy being together when other teams dread their meetings?

It does have a great deal to do with the members of the team but the “lion’s share” of the responsibility lies squarely on the shoulders of the team leader  The team leader should be practicing some key concepts to help develop all the members of the team.

With that serving as our backdrop, let me lay out for you Six Habits of Effective Team Leaders  practices that promote healthy leadership teams.

  1. Coordinate – They serve as the conductor of the orchestra keeping all the participating parties informed and involved.
  2. Collaborate – They are not afraid of other’s ideas or input and can be highly effective in teaching others even through brainstorming.
  3. Communicate – They keep people informed and creatively distribute information, even using this as a teaching tool.
  4. Delegate – They have a proper view of delegation, viewing it as a way to develop others not as a means to rid themselves of unwanted jobs.
  5. Evaluate – They see the value of consistent evaluation and they personally communicate ways to improve effectiveness.
  6. Celebrate – They are quick to celebrate the victories, regardless of how small they may seem, with sincere praise and encouragement.
