I am often asked for reading list recommendations on topics such as leadership, personal growth and student ministry. I plan to share these lists in future blogs. But for now…

I wanted to get a little head start on the usual end of year list idea with my “Eight Month Top 10 List.” (These are in no particular order.)

  1. The Fruitful Life, Jerry Bridges – I love anything Jerry Bridges has written and appreciate his practical devotional insights. This book addresses the Fruit of the Spirit. (Jerry died this year 2016)
  2. Delighting in God, A. W. Tozer and James Snyder – This is the newest released book based on his recorded sermons. As always, thought provoking and challenging.
  3. Deep Work, Cal Newport – An interesting book challenging the way we approach productivity. The premise of the book is the clutter of our society hinders deep work ability creating shallow work habits.
  4. Out of My Mind, Sharon Draper – This book was recommended to me by my Granddaughter. It is extremely insightful into the world of youth, plus you will not be able to put it down. I think a must read.
  5. A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life, William Law – If you enjoy reading the Puritan writers, this one is for you. Law nails the concept of the holy life.
  6. The Advantage, Patrick Lencioni – Most of his books are leadership parables but this one is straight forward business leadership advice. It is as though Lencioni has taken all of his expertise and condensed it into this great book.
  7. Finding Truth, Nancy Pearcey – The same author of Total Truth has written another great book for this age. In this book she addresses five principles for unmasking atheism, secularism, and other God substitutes.
  8. Living Forward, Michael Hyatt and Daniel Harkavy – This is an extremely practical book on productivity. I read several on this topic in search of strategic answers and this was by far one of the best.
  9. Messy Grace, Caleb Kaltenbach – Caleb is a pastor whose mother and father were gay and lesbian. He masterfully addresses the tension between truth and grace.
  10. The End of Me, Kyle Idleman – What can God do with us when we come to the end of ourselves? Kyle looks at the Beatitudes and addresses a countercultural approach to a life that works.
So, I will have 10 more soon. Let me know what you think.
