”Don’t talk to me about absolute truth…truth is what I say it is!” Those words were said with emphasis and passion that bordered on anger. I was engaged in conversation with a college student. The discussion had been going well until I brought up absolute truth.

When I was asked what I meant by absolute truth I said three things and each one seemed to evoke an increasingly charged negative response.

  1. Absolute truth is something that is true for all people, places and times.
  2. The foundation and source of absolute truth is Jesus (John 18:37) and the Bible (John 17:17).
  3. Knowing absolute truth and the One who is the source of truth sets us free (John 8:31) rather than restricting us as the world believes.

We live in a pluralistic world where relativism appears to reign. This is often referred to as the postmodern generation but we might be better defined as the post-postmodern generation at this point.

Although relativistic thinking is predominant today, remember that the battle for truth is not a twenty-first century construct. The Scriptures of both the Old and New Testaments address this same pluralistic paradigm.

  • Isaiah 59:14…for truth is fallen in the street
  • Jeremiah 7:28…truth has perished
  • Jeremiah 9:3…they are not valiant for the truth
  • Romans 1:18…who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.
  • Romans 1:25…who exchange the truth of God for the lie
  • 2 Timothy 3:7…always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

For this reason we have chosen to address four critical topics at Word of Life Snow Camp this season in our Saturday night meetings. We are calling it the “I Can Trust” series:

  1. I Can Trust the Bible – Mike Calhoun (Live Date: February 2)
  2. I Can Trust Absolute Truth – Mike Calhoun (Live Date: February February 9)
  3. I Can Trust Jesus Christ – Ric Garland (Live Date: February 16)
  4. I Can Trust Creation – Jeff Cutting (Live Date: February 23)

You can watch the sessions live each Saturday night at 6:45pm by going to the Word of Life Snow Camp website and clicking on the Live button. You can also find the recorded sessions, notes and PowerPoints at 2013 Snow Camp Media or on my website (under Resources/Downloads) in the “I Can Trust Series” folder.

We have nothing to apologize for when it comes to being propagators of the truth and believers in absolute truth. Our faith is based upon solid facts not merely personal preference or theory. It is time for believers to “stand up” and “speak out” about what we believe because contrary to the opinion of my college acquaintance…truth is not what we say it is!
