I am a flash, bang, dazzle type of person. I like the big moments of life and ministry. Music moves my soul, especially when it crescendos. Fireworks are exciting but my favorite part is the finale.

However, it is not wise to build a life or ministry on crescendos, finales, and dazzle because they are not sustainable. Real life and ministry take place in the valleys and is humbly celebrated on the mountain tops. Much of the daily activity we refer to as mundane is critical to the long-term process of our spiritual growth.

Joshua 6:1-20 is a great example of this principle. The people of Israel were instructed to march around the city of Jericho in silence for six days. There were probably those in the crowd who thought this was mundane and a waste of time. They simply could not understand. – Missing the significance of the mundane jeopardizes the “big moments” and impedes our ability to maintain the “big picture.”

Being faithful in the mundane aspects of the faith-life is about obedience. Israel did not know the walls were going to collapse on day seven. Remember, they had not read verse 20. This lack of knowledge did not exempt them from their responsibility to obey. They longed for complete victory over their enemy which would only come after their obedience in the 6-day grind. Their valley experience was followed by the flash, bang and grand finale of the mountain top.

Here are 4 Ways to Maximize the Mundane Moments of the Faith- Life:

  • Change your mind-set about the mundane: See the big picture.
  • Commit to obedience in the valleys: Make every day count.
  • Connect with like-minded believers:  There is strength in numbers.
  • Celebrate the mountain top victories: Enjoy the grand finales!

Joshua 6 should remind us there are “day sevens” of shouting, wall-crumbling victories. We need those days to keep us going. But we should never lose site of the fact that they may be preceded by multiple days of silent, mundane obedience.

Are you willing to simply obey in the mundane to see God do His wonders?
