There are just some concepts that demand imminent action! Time is of the essence when facing crisis. The epidemic of secularization on society generally–but specifically on students–fits into the imminent action category.

The consequences are sweeping for all of Christendom, but the long-term effects on Gen-Z could be devastating. I am not “Chicken Little” and do not believe “the sky is falling,” but I do believe students are losing their moral compass.

Consider the following facts that present Secularization’s Ultimatum:

  • Non-religion globally – the fastest growing religion worldwide is “non-religion.” Some are referred to as atheists (6.54% from 1910-2010); World Religious Beliefs.
  • One-fifth of the U.S. public and one-third of adults under 30 are religiously unaffiliated (32% of 18-29 year olds according to Pew Research Center report).
  • Gen Z projections – continuing decrease in religious participation and beliefs among each new generation. It is expected that only 45 percent of Generation Z will believe in God by the time they reach adulthood. That leaves those who have religious beliefs in the minority for the first time in history, according to a YouGov survey in 2013.

Let me just suggest three responses to Secularization’s Ultimatum for Student Ministry:

  1. Students need to hear the truth of the Word of God taught consistently, apologetically, thoroughly, passionately and clearly.
  2. Students need to see the truth of the Word of God lived out through the lives of people who know and love the Lord, the Word and life.
  3. Students need to be challenged to make time for the Word of God (Quiet Time, Bible Study, etc.) in their personal lives every day, being taught that this is the “normal Christian life” and not the “super Christian life.”

As parents, pastors and youth leaders the choice is up to us. Will we meet the challenge or will we lose an entire generation?
